Ageing population needs electronic invoicing

At the recent EBAday event, Bo Harold (Chairman of the Expert Group on Electronic Invoicing) brought up an interesting point during a presentation on e-invoicing. In the presentation he listed ‘5 mega-class arguments for e-invoicing’, which included the usual cost, service and environmental benefits. However, one issue he also raised was that of EU Demographics. He pointed out that as the European population is gradually getting older, there is a greater need for automation, especially in processes that are time-consuming and require lots of manual input, such as paper invoicing. Over time there will be fewer workers to carry out such tasks, so in order to survive businesses need to automate these processes wherever possible – ‘all routine work that can be automated – has to be’ he stated. This demographic driver for e-invoicing is often overlooked but is important.
